“If any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5).

In this great city that we live in [Philadelphia] I keep hearing of instances of folks dismissing wisdom in favor of foolishness. People are gathering in crowds, hosting Easter service and playing basketball at recreation centers. I’ve heard some use the first part of a verse to justify their actions: “God has not given us a spirit of fear…” (1 Timothy 1:7).

People have confused fear with wisdom, suggesting that because believers are not meeting in buildings that somehow we are operating in the flesh. A more comprehensive reading of that verse says what God has given us, Paul goes on to say, “…but of power, love and a sound mind.”

Understanding what a “sound mind” looks like helps us to understand what Spirit-controlled boldness looks like. A wise person considers the correct information in front them coupled with a sensitivity to God’s leading through His Word and through His Spirit.

We should also consider the wise counsel of others as we come to a wise decision. The reality is that God has promised to provide us with an abundance of wisdom. Let’s use power, love and His wisdom.

The stakes are high as people are dying, and I’m not suggesting that we become cowards and shrink back from our testimony but we are warned not to tempt God in our actions (Matthew 4:7). During this global pandemic please use the resources available to you to make good decisions and remain healthy.

Saints, although we are separated we are still boldly proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ, we are still gathering virtually, still partaking of the Lord’s Table, still praying, still giving, still encouraging one another…etc. We are still the church even without the building. I want to encourage you to have a sober assessment of the present dangers and to exercise the God given wisdom that He gives generously as we navigate this pandemic.
