I was introduced to the book Faith Wins by Adam Groza by my dear friend, Michelle Jenkins, who has been a friend and mentor for many years.
Since July of last year, my husband’s life, as well as mine, has been turned upside down. My husband Ken’s glaucoma has overtaken our lives. He became legally blind rapidly, which sent him into a depression.
At the same time, we knew that God was there, but we struggled with our doubt. We know so well that God says, “We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Yes, I believe that is true. But I would be lying if I said “Yes, amen!!! Walk by faith!”
What would you do if your loved one lost most of their eyesight?
To us it felt like being in a sandstorm. If you have ever seen a movie or TV show with a sandstorm scene, then you know how limited the character’s vision can become and how quickly the sandstorm can set our favorite characters off course.
In the storm, we were constantly losing our balance and bearing. Most people wouldn’t be thanking the Lord in that situation, and we can’t fake our “amen” for a while.
This all came to mind as author Adam Groza started Faith Wins by sharing that “help my unbelief” is not a commendation of doubt but a cry for sanctification.”
When I think about that dark season, Ken was mostly crying for what he had lost, and praying for God to fix it. Over time, by the grace of God, along with prayers of many saints around us, we are slowly coming to understand that if it is His will, then He will be glorified. We will be okay. God is there to strengthen our faith with this.
In this book, the Groza uses many Biblical characters and explains that they also had moments of struggling faith. He also helps us understand by using many analogies.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who feels like you are going through a season of crises of faith. Please hang in there.
“His grace is sufficient for you, and His power works best in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
