The Great Awakening produced by Sight & Sound Films, is an inspiring depiction of the faith journey and ministry of Rev. George Whitefield and its intersection with the life of Benjamin Franklin.

The story begins in the 1700s on two continents with both men in their youth: one the son of a harsh father and praying mother (Whitefield), the other the son of a believing father (Franklin). Each young man sets out into the world without significant Christian faith. Whitefield is drawn to the stage; Franklin to science.

In college, Whitefield has a life-changing encounter with a holy group of students. He accepts Christ as Lord and Savior, which begins what will be a world-changing ministry known as the First Great Awakening.

Whitefield’s preaching eventually takes him from England to the American colonies where he encounters Benjamin Franklin, who was by then a political leader and inventor.

The unlikely friendship that forms between the two men spans years as Franklin acts as Whitefield’s sermon publisher. Spiritual tension undergirds their relationship as Franklin refuses to surrender to Christ while Whitefield never gives up hope that he may be saved.

This historical film is a beautiful portrayal of the loving grace of Christ, which transcends social status and all man-made barriers. Christian viewers will find themselves motivated to fulfill The Great Commission with passion and steadfastness.
