SUMMARY:George Liele Church Planting\, Evangelism and Missions Sunday
DESCRIPTION:George Liele Church Planting\, Evangelism and Missions Sunday is an annual Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) event\, planned this year on Sunday\, February 1\,  celebrating African American and Black missionary pioneers\, such as: \n\nGeorge Liele\, who many acknowledge as the first overseas missionary from the United States in 1782.\nLott Carey organized African American missions in the 1800s.\nS.M. Lockridge was a faithful preacher of the gospel in the 20th century.\nSid Smith was one of the first African American Southern Baptist denominational leaders in the modern era.\nFred Luter was elected as the first African American president of the Southern Baptist Convention.\n\nGeorge Liele is widely acknowledged as the first overseas missionary from the United States. He was a formerly enslaved man from Georgia who used his freedom to take the good news to the nations. In 1782\, George and his wife\, Hannah\, and their four children left Savannah and landed in Kingston\, Jamaica. The missionary couple worked hard and faced many trials. By 1814\, there were around 8\,000 Baptists in Jamaica. This number included enslaved\, freedmen and some whites. As a result of Liele’s ministry\, there were over 20\,000 believers in 1832. We want to be sure the legacy of George Liele is remembered and shared. That’s why the IMB developed downloadable resources that you can share with your church\, small groups and friends. You’ll find videos\, a Black Church Missions brochure\, information about George Liele’s life and ministry and a missionary prayer guide. We hope these resources will be helpful as you plan\, promote and recognize this special emphasis Sunday at your church. \nYou can find these resources and learn more about George Liele by visiting imb.org/george-liele. Perhaps you will want to share this incredible video with your church about the first church George Liele planted in Jamaica. \n \nMark your calendar and plan to recognize Sunday\, Feb. 1\, 2026\, as George Liele Church Planting\, Evangelism and Missions Sunday. \nIf you have questions\, please contact Quintell Hill\, Black/Multi-Ethnic Network Strategist\, International Mission Board\, at info@imb.org.

SUMMARY:Week of Prayer for International Missions and Lottie Moon Christmas Offering
DESCRIPTION:Week of Prayer for International Missions\nSouthern Baptists observe a Week of Prayer for International Missions each year before the annual Lottie Moon offering emphasis. Will you join your heart with others to pray for missionaries around the world who are faithfully sharing the gospel? \nLottie Moon Christmas Offering®\nEvery year\, Southern Baptist churches collect an offering to send and support missionaries to be steadfastly present among those who have never heard the gospel. 100% of the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering® enables gospel transformation among the unreached. \nIn 1873\, Lottie Moon was appointed as a missionary to China. She spent nearly 40 years sharing the gospel with love\, courage\, and unwavering faith. \nHer letters home inspired churches to pray and give\, leading to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions. Today\, this offering supports missionaries and helps take the life-transforming message of Jesus to the nations. \nLet’s honor her legacy by praying and giving so others can hear the hope of the gospel. \nDownload resources for your church.  \nPhoto courtesy of IMB.

SUMMARY:IMB Missions College
DESCRIPTION:The International Mission Board (IMB) will host Missions College on Jan. 4-7\, 2023\, near Richmond\, Virginia. \nMissions College is a training event for pastors\, church leaders\, mission trip participants and church members engaged in missions\, or people who are interested in partnering with IMB teams. Missions College centers around 11-hour learning tracks led by missionaries with extensive field experience. Participants will choose one of the following tracks: \n\nFoundations for Mission\nMissions Scope\nCross-Cultural Evangelism and Discipleship\nDisplaced Peoples\nUsing Oral Methods for Discipleship and Leadership Development\nGlobal Cities\nStrategy Coaching (for mission team leaders involved in church planting)\n\nOne of Missions College’s most popular tracks is Cross-Cultural Evangelism and Discipleship. \nCross-Cultural Evangelism and Discipleship: \nThe people we are trying to reach with the gospel have radically different perspectives on the world. Learn about worldview differences and the danger of syncretism to help you evangelize cross-culturally. Practice gospel presentations that can be adapted to different people groups\, and that you can teach to others. Also\, learn about short and long-term discipleship needs and develop a plan for discipling believers in various contexts. Led by field missionaries Joel Williams\, who serves in the Americas\, and Jeremy Hollie\, who serves in Sub-Saharan Africa. \nAlso included at Missions College are breakout sessions and daily worship times led by keynote speakers. \nParticipants will choose three of the following 90-minute breakout sessions. \n\nThe Sending Church\nCulturally Appropriate Gospel Presentations\nIntroduction to Storying\nPartnering from the Backseat: Avoiding Dependency\nShort-term Trips\nEthnodoxology\nPrayer Strategies\nCommunity Health Lessons for Short-term Trips\nGoing to the Nations with IMB\nNext Generation Missions\n\n“We are asking the Lord\, by His grace\, to use the powerful testimonies and deep experiences of our IMB field missionaries to teach and mentor Mission College participants\,” Lloyd Rodgers said. Rodgers serves as a trainer in the Americas. \nParticipants from last year shared how the Lord used the time to show how they can be involved in the missions task: \n“The biggest thing we are going to go back and share is that anyone can come here\, even lay people\, whatever position you have in your church\, you have something you can give. IMB really shows you through the breakout sessions and the classes that there are so many ways to fit in.” \n“Missions College has given me a deeper sense of the message that was given to us in Luke that we should make sure we are spreading the Word and using the tools that God has blessed us with. I’ve learned a lot.” \n“I am so excited to go back and talk about the opportunities there are to share Christ\, the opportunities we have with IMB that we’re learning about. It’s already changed me spiritually.” \nRodgers\, who is one of the event’s organizers\, added the IMB’s intent to ignite a passion for the lost in the hearts of believers. “Our desire is to see God glorified by learning the skills needed to respond cross-culturally to lostness\, the greatest problem in the world. Our prayer is that Missions College will anchor in the heart of each participant the biblical mandate to be steadfastly present among people and places where Jesus is not named or known\,” Rodgers said. \nThe cost for Missions College is $249 per person. The fee includes training\, materials\, lodging for three nights and meals. \nRegister now: https://www.imb.org/event/missions-college-2023-virginia/ For information\, please email: missionscollege@imb.org or call 804-353-0151.

SUMMARY:A Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church
DESCRIPTION:Remember those who are in prison\, as though in prison with them\, and those who are mistreated\, since you also are in the body. (Hebrews 13:3) \nRICHMOND\, Va. (BP) – The International Mission Board is collaborating with Nik Ripken Ministries to raise awareness about current religious persecution through the Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. This SBC-wide initiative will be observed June 6. It is a call for Southern Baptists to increase their awareness of and pray fervently for the global persecuted church. \nIn 2020\, more than 340 million Christians experienced high levels of persecution and discrimination. Also last year\, 4\,761 Christians were killed for faith-related reasons\, and 4\,277 Christians were detained without trial\, arrested\, sentenced or imprisoned. In addition\, 4\,488 churches and Christian buildings were attacked\, according to data from the World Watch List. \n“As our Southern Baptist missionaries take the Gospel to the most difficult to reach peoples and places around the world\, they are witness to the suffering of those who boldly follow Jesus and are constantly confronted by those who persecute the Lord’s church\,” IMB President Paul Chitwood said. “While our hearts break for our brothers and sisters in Christ who endure persecution and even martyrdom\, we often feel powerless to help them. But we aren’t! We serve the One who\, as Job declared\, ‘makes nations great\, and he destroys them; he enlarges nations\, and leads them away.’ \n“When we pray for those who are suffering\, we have access to the One who can sustain them\, comfort them and bring them justice.” \nPersecution of the global church comes most fiercely from within a believer’s own family\, according to John Brady\, the IMB’s vice president for global engagement. However\, many believers are facing intense persecution from opposing religious groups and their governments as well. \nFamilial persecution is evident in the life of Naomi*\, a Deaf widow. COVID-19 forced her to move out of her city in Indonesia back home to a remote island. There\, she converted from Islam to Christianity after working with an IMB Deaf translation team in her former city. Her parents were irate\, and her dad locked her in his home and beat her daily\, trying to get her to abandon her newfound faith. \nBecause of her daily beatings\, she developed serious health complications. As she was being treated in a city six hours away\, her 9-year-old daughter reached out to her mother’s church leaders for prayer. Naomi eventually recovered\, and her daughter has been able to see the Lord work in her mother’s life. \nHowever\, Naomi\, like so many other believers around the world\, still needs prayer. \n“Don’t pray for our persecution to end\,” a missionary reported a national believer saying. “Pray that we will be obedient through our suffering.” \nNik Ripken*\, author of “The Insanity of God” and IMB missionary emeritus\, said the main cause of persecution globally is when individuals profess Christ as Savior. Ripken has spent more than two decades studying global persecution and collecting stories from persecuted believers. \n“If believers and their churches simply pray to God for persecution to end\, the only way for God to answer that type of prayer is to stop people from following Jesus\,” Ripken said. “Rather\, we pray for persecuted believers to remain obedient through their suffering\, and we seek to identify with persecuted believers by sharing our faith in whatever environment we find ourselves.” \nEleanor Witcher\, director of the IMB’s Prayer Office\, believes that one of the primary prayer needs for the persecuted church is discipleship. \n“Pray that the roots of new believers (and believers who are weak in their knowledge of the Word) will quickly grow deep in Scripture as they learn to abide in Christ so that these new believers will stand firm under any persecution they may face\,” Witcher said. \nWitcher emphasized that this need for discipleship\, growth in the Word and increased evangelism is something that all believers\, not just persecuted believers\, must cultivate in their own lives. \nIn praying for the global persecuted church\, “first\, we pray for ourselves that our perspective will be aligned to God’s will and then we pray for our brothers and sisters who are suffering for the glory of Christ\,” Witcher said. \nSouthern Baptists are invited to join in prayer in the weeks leading up to the Day of Prayer. Specifically\, believers can pray for: \n\nthe church to pray faithfully and fervently in accordance with God’s Word and will.\nfollowers of Christ to consistently study and obey Scripture so they are spiritually prepared when persecution comes.\nchurch leaders to boldly proclaim the Gospel in the face of opposition.\nthe persecuted\, that they have the strength to live in the power\, love and sound mind that God alone can provide.\nthose who are brutalized to sense the Lord’s love surrounding them and respond to those who have injured them with grace and dignity.\nthe global church to commit its heart and time in prayer and fasting for the persecuted church.\neach church to keep its focus on the glory of God and growth of His church.\n\nRipken believes that God’s highest purpose in persecution is to call His people to Himself\, to refocus their attention to the suffering of their Lord. \n“When followers of Christ suffer willingly for their Savior\, it gives their faith value\,” he said. “That kind of suffering also increases witness.” \nJoin other believers across the Southern Baptist Convention by committing to pray for the persecuted church. SUMMARY:IMB’s first virtual Sending Celebration scheduled for June 9\, 2020
DESCRIPTION:Since 1845\, nearly 25\,000 Southern Baptist missionaries have shared the gospel\, made disciples\, planted churches and settled their families in 185 countries around the world. Sending Celebrations are a time to commission new missionaries who are furthering the vision of reaching all peoples with the gospel of Jesus Christ. \nConsidering the necessary cancellation of the SBC Annual Meeting in Orlando\, Florida\, where the Sending Celebration was to take place\, IMB has moved the celebration to an online event on June 9 at 7 p.m. (EDT). \nFifty-nine new missionaries and two who were appointed in January will serve within each of IMB’s nine global affinities: the Americas; Central Asia; Deaf; East Asia; Europe; Northern Africa and the Middle East; South Asia; Southeast Asia; and Sub-Saharan Africa. \nJoin the Facebook Live event on June 9 at 7 p.m. EDT on IMB’s Facebook and Vimeo pages. You and your church will have the opportunity to hear the stories of how God has called these missionaries into His service. You will also be able to join others in praying over them as they prepare to make their homes overseas for the sake of the gospel. \nA downloadable and printable prayer card is provided to help you keep these missionaries in your prayers. These cards and the invitation to the virtual Sending Celebration can be shared with your church families.
