I purchased this book, Divine Dilemma, from the bookstore at the Ark Encounter exhibit, which I visited with members of our church in the summer of 2023. The book’s author, Ken Ham, is known as the CEO and founder of Answers in Genesis, the Creation Museum and the Ark Encounter.

I chose this book after reading the first few pages.

The question discussed was: “How do we understand all the death, disease, and suffering in the world if there is a loving God?” (pg. 7).

This was a question I wanted to learn more about because I struggled with answering this question in my own women’s ministry and when encountering church members and visitors as a pastor’s wife. I would avoid this question or conversation because I did not know how to navigate or respond to their questions.

Ken Ham not only discusses this question in his book, but he also shares the story of his brother Robert, a Bible teaching pastor who passed away at the early age of forty-three due to frontal lobe dementia. This disease robbed him of his independence and physical presence, leaving him like an empty shell.

Reading this book helped me to realize that everyone suffers, and I now feel more comfortable talking and listening to others with deeper compassion. I no longer avoid questions about hurting people or a family member’s suffering, I can point them to our loving God. I know I do not have to have all the answers. I realize sin entered the world and the destruction it causes. I now feel a sense of urgency to point everyone to Christ.

The “Divine Dilemma” by Ken Ham can be purchased at Answers in Genesis’ online store or on Amazon.com.
