DESCRIPTION:George Liele Church Planting\, Evangelism and Missions Sunday is an annual Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) event\, planned this year on Sunday\, February 1\,  celebrating African American and Black missionary pioneers\, such as: \n\nGeorge Liele\, who many acknowledge as the first overseas missionary from the United States in 1782.\nLott Carey organized African American missions in the 1800s.\nS.M. Lockridge was a faithful preacher of the gospel in the 20th century.\nSid Smith was one of the first African American Southern Baptist denominational leaders in the modern era.\nFred Luter was elected as the first African American president of the Southern Baptist Convention.\n\nGeorge Liele is widely acknowledged as the first overseas missionary from the United States. He was a formerly enslaved man from Georgia who used his freedom to take the good news to the nations. In 1782\, George and his wife\, Hannah\, and their four children left Savannah and landed in Kingston\, Jamaica. The missionary couple worked hard and faced many trials. By 1814\, there were around 8\,000 Baptists in Jamaica. This number included enslaved\, freedmen and some whites. As a result of Liele’s ministry\, there were over 20\,000 believers in 1832. We want to be sure the legacy of George Liele is remembered and shared. That’s why the IMB developed downloadable resources that you can share with your church\, small groups and friends. You’ll find videos\, a Black Church Missions brochure\, information about George Liele’s life and ministry and a missionary prayer guide. DESCRIPTION:January 18\, 2026 is the annual Sanctity of Life Sunday in Southern Baptist churches. Download a free bulletin insert and prayer guide from the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) to help create a culture of life within families in your church. \nThe following excerpt is from the ERLC’s life guide\, “Created in the Image of God: A Practical Guide to Building a Culture of Life.” \nScenario: A college student who is a pre-med major has a class assignment to take a position on whether abortion is “an essential part of reproductive healthcare.” Her classmates\, none of whom agree with her pro-life convictions\, all believe that it is\, so she knows that she will be in the minority when she disagrees. She doesn’t believe that simply quoting Scripture will be enough to convince anyone of her position. What advice would you give her for her presentation? \nWhile she should not shy away from her religious convictions in this presentation\, the context of an academic pre-med setting should encourage her to lean into the plentiful scientific truths that support the pro-life position. \nFirst\, she should emphasize that abortion is not an essential part of reproductive healthcare because it does not seek to restore or heal\, but rather to harm. From the moment of fertilization\, a preborn child has completely unique genetic information which designates them as a separate human being with intrinsic worth\, dignity\, and a right to life. The milestones of fetal development demonstrate that preborn children are living\, growing persons. \nIt is good to remind her that\, while her faith may be the primary basis for her convictions regarding abortion\, God has also given us natural revelation that can be observed through science. This evidence is convincing in its own right and can be effectively used to defend a pro-life position\, especially in the context of an audience that does not submit to the teachings of Scripture. \nFor you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. Psalm 139:13 \nFinally\, she should address the use of the procedure in tragic circumstances to highlight how they are different. The use of the same procedures for treatment in marginal cases such as ectopic pregnancies is not a positive case for the vast majority of abortions. In those few cases\, Christians can recognize the need for action to save the mother’s life\, while not allowing abortion advocates to equate the two procedures as morally similar.

He moved to the United States in 1998 at the age of 27. The third of four children\, he became a believer in Christ when he was 13 years old and was baptized at the age of 16. He has been married with his lovely and God-fearing wife Edna Chery since 1997. They have been blessed with three amazing biological children (Noelson II\, Jeshua Y and Immanuel K) and Jordy their nephew who has been with them since he was 8 years old. These young men have been serving the Lord since their childhood\, and are now among youth ministers in their church\, First Haitian Metanoia Baptist Church. \nAcademically\, Noelson has achieved a bachelor’s degree in theology from Philadelphia Biblical University (Cairn University)\, then a master’s degree in languages and cultures from West Chester University of Pennsylvania. He was ordained as a pastor in 2008. In 2019\, in the heat of the pandemic\, the Lord called Noelson to start a new church. This congregation is now serving many families in the greater Philadelphia area. Now\, God has called him into the position of ethnic church advancement consultant with the Baptist Resource Network. He feels honored and grateful to be able to assist fellow pastors\, standing alongside them\, and doing this great work of ministry for the advancement of the Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. \nDavid Ludwig\, BRN Director of Discipleship and Leadership Development\nDavid Ludwig\, as director of discipleship and leadership development for the Baptist Resource Network of Pennsylvania/South Jersey\, is passionate about disciple-making and equipping pastors and leaders to develop healthy\, disciple-making churches. David is also a Certified Leadership Coach and has coached pastors\, church planters\, and other leaders across our network.
