SUMMARY:SBC Seminaries Sunday
DESCRIPTION:The estimated 46\,000 autonomous churches that cooperate with the Southern Baptist Convention pool their resources to support the work of the six theological seminaries. The Convention operates these seminaries to train its ministers and Christian workers. The six are: \n\nThe Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville\, Kentucky (established 1859);\nThe Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth\, Texas (1908);\nNew Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans\, Louisiana (1917);\nGateway Seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention in Ontario\, California (1944);\nThe Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest\, North Carolina (1951); and\nMidwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City\, Missouri (1957).\n\nCollectively the six seminaries have been given a challenging mission: “to prepare God-called men and women for vocational service in Baptist churches and in other Christian ministries throughout the world through programs of spiritual development\, theological studies\, and practical preparation in ministry.” \nSeminary-trained students are trained to go and evangelize\, baptize\, disciple\, and teach individuals across the nation and around the world (Matthew 28:18-20). The Convention has committed itself to provide seminary education and training at the lowest cost possible so graduates are not burdened with debt as they embark on this noble quest. \nThe six seminaries are funded in part by the Convention’s Cooperative Program. The Cooperative Program helps fund ministries and missions through cooperating state conventions and the Southern Baptist Convention. About 22 percent of all Cooperative Program contributions received by the Southern Baptist Convention are directed to the six theological seminaries and the SBC Historical Library and Archives. In addition\, the seminaries are supported by endowments\, donations\, tuition\, and fees. \nSee Related Story.

SUMMARY:National Day of Prayer
DESCRIPTION:The National Day of Prayer exists to mobilize unified public prayer for America. \nTURN TO GOD IN PRAYER\nThe National Day of Prayer is observed annually on the first Thursday in May. This day of observance\, designated by the United States Congress\, asks people “to turn to God in prayer and meditation.” The modern law formalizing the annual National Day of Prayer observance was enacted in 1952\, and each year since\, the President of the United States has signed a proclamation encouraging all Americans to pray on this day. \nPRAY THROUGHOUT THE DAY\nThis year’s National Day of Prayer will be observed on May 7\, and the theme verse is Habakkuk 2:14: “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” However\, due to events around the world\, we will not gather in churches or town squares to pray. Instead\, we are encouraging individuals to pray throughout the day and to invite others to join with them online so that we may fill the earth with prayers of hope. \n#NATIONALDAYOFPRAYER\nWe ask that you post your written prayer by text or video on your own social media site with the hashtag #NationalDayofPrayer and join the prayer movement this year as we petition God to move in mighty ways across our communities\, our country\, and our world. \nAs a church\, you can make short prayer videos from key community leaders\, pastors\, and national leaders to support each area of emphasis and post these prayer videos at different times throughout the day. \nDownload social media graphics. \nSchedule for Thursday\, May 7:\n9:00 am – Pray for your community and neighbors.\n10:00 am – Pray for churches and their impact to share the Gospel.\n11:00 am – Pray for those that are vulnerable and those that have lost loved ones due to COVID-19.\nNoon – Pray for businesses and those that have lost their jobs.\n1:00 pm – Pray for teachers\, schools\, students\, and parents.\n2:00 pm – Pray for those serving in the military.\n3:00 pm – Pray for healthcare workers\, first responders\, and those in the service industry.\n4:00 pm – Pray for city leaders and state officials.\n5:00 pm – Pray for the President and national leaders.\n6:00 pm – Pray for a movement of God across our country and around the world.\n7:00 pm – Join with others across the country on your front porch and sing “Amazing Grace.” \nFinally\, we invite everyone to conclude the day with the National Day of Prayer Broadcast: Pray God’s Glory across the Earth\, which will be presented from 8:00pm to 10:00pm EST on GodTV\, Daystar\, Facebook Live\, and additional outlets. \nSOUTHERN BAPTIST CONVENTION Prayer Opportunities:\n  \n \nSBC President J.D. Greear offers tips for fasting as well as prayer points in the article\, A call to a day of fasting and prayer. \nThe Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention also has developed a prayer guide\, urging participants to pray for the Seven Centers of Influence on the National Day of Prayer.

SUMMARY:SBC Advance: An online ministry update
DESCRIPTION:While the 2020 SBC Annual Meeting has been canceled for the first time since 1945\, Southern Baptists will still be provided with an opportunity to hear from the entities of the Southern Baptist Convention through an online event June 2 hosted by the SBC Executive Committee. \nSBC Advance\, a two-hour online event\, is not designed to be a substitute for the annual meeting\, but will provide ministry updates from and interviews with all SBC entity and auxiliary heads\, as well as SBC President J.D. Greear. The event will be livestreamed at SBCadvance.com starting at 3 p.m. EDT Tuesday\, June 2\, 2020. \n“SBC Advance is about telling the story of what God is doing through our churches and the work we are doing together regionally\, statewide\, nationally and internationally\,” said SBC EC president and CEO Ronnie Floyd. “This online gathering will not just be informational\, but inspirational for all Southern Baptists. It will also lead us to have a greater commitment and sharper focus on sharing the Good News of Jesus with the whole world. This online experience is for all Southern Baptist laypeople\, pastors\, church staff members\, church leaders\, denominational employees and missionaries here in America and across the world.” \nGreear will provide a presidential update during the event as well. \n“Southern Baptists have always united around the need to see people come to saving faith in Jesus\,” Greear said. “While we may be apart right now\, SBC Advance will allow us to hear about the great things God is doing and will call us to seek His face for the future. While the times are challenging\, this event will remind us of who we are: a convention of more than 47\,500 churches that stand for the Gospel above all and the need to get the message of Jesus Christ to the nations.” \nThe 2020 SBC Annual Meeting was scheduled to be held in Orlando June 9-10\, but the COVID-19 global pandemic forced Southern Baptist leaders to cancel the event for the first time since World War II. \nBut while Southern Baptists may not be gathering physically\, SBC Advance will provide the opportunity to gather virtually and remember the fundamental reason for Southern Baptist cooperation — missions. \n“We must not lose connection to one another nor waver in our shared commitment to get the Gospel to the nations\,” IMB president Paul Chitwood said in a statement. “SBC Advance will help us do what we must do: keep our focus on our mission.” \nVideo updates from the entities\, annual reports\, audited financial statements\, and other updated reporting data will be provided at the time of the event.

SUMMARY:IMB’s first virtual Sending Celebration scheduled for June 9\, 2020
DESCRIPTION:Since 1845\, nearly 25\,000 Southern Baptist missionaries have shared the gospel\, made disciples\, planted churches and settled their families in 185 countries around the world. Sending Celebrations are a time to commission new missionaries who are furthering the vision of reaching all peoples with the gospel of Jesus Christ. \nConsidering the necessary cancellation of the SBC Annual Meeting in Orlando\, Florida\, where the Sending Celebration was to take place\, IMB has moved the celebration to an online event on June 9 at 7 p.m. (EDT). \nFifty-nine new missionaries and two who were appointed in January will serve within each of IMB’s nine global affinities: the Americas; Central Asia; Deaf; East Asia; Europe; Northern Africa and the Middle East; South Asia; Southeast Asia; and Sub-Saharan Africa. \nJoin the Facebook Live event on June 9 at 7 p.m. EDT on IMB’s Facebook and Vimeo pages. You and your church will have the opportunity to hear the stories of how God has called these missionaries into His service. You will also be able to join others in praying over them as they prepare to make their homes overseas for the sake of the gospel. \nA downloadable and printable prayer card is provided to help you keep these missionaries in your prayers. These cards and the invitation to the virtual Sending Celebration can be shared with your church families.

Each summer\, local congregations learn about\, pray for and give to support special ministries\, outreach projects and other initiatives\, such as collegiate ministries\, volunteer ministries\, disaster relief\, and emergency funding for pastors\, which are uniquely connected to PA/SJ Baptists and not funded through regular giving streams. \nFourteen million people across Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ\, which makes the work of expanding the Kingdom through the BRN and its churches crucial. To that end\, every year\, Baptists across the BRN pray for and give financially to expand God’s Kingdom work right here in our own backyards. \nNote: Each church may choose to observe the Week of Prayer and Offering for the Baptist Resource Network at any time\, but two dates have been added to the calendar: the traditional timing during the week after Labor Day or an alternate week of the first full week of August. Thank you for your prayers and generous gifts!
